Auto Enrolment (otherwise known as Workplace Pensions)

If you are an employer, then Auto Enrolment will affect you.

Commonly referred to as Workplace Pensions, all UK employers are now legally bound to offer employees the option of a workplace pension, and automatically enrol them into a scheme by April 2019. Your company may have an earlier staging date for completion.

The aim of the UK Government is to ensure that as many people as possible have a pension, whether through their employer or privately. As a result, workplace pensions affect every business, even if they only employ one person.

Companies and individuals who fail to implement a pension scheme, or lack robust ongoing compliance will face fines and/or imprisonment.

If you have not already begun the process, then you need to start assessing your workforce as soon as possible, and identify which employees are treated as workers under the new legislation.

Further details are available in our fact sheet, and some of the key points are highlighted below:

  • You must have your workplace pension in place (and be compliant) before your staging date
  • Your business will need access to software for the management of your workplace pension
  • Your current payroll system may be able to deliver this for you, or you might have to upgrade
  • It takes an estimated 12 months to put a workplace pension in place
  • You will be responsible for auto-enrolling employees and deducting contributions from their pay, whilst making contributions on their behalf
  • You are responsible for paying the employer payments, from a minimum of 1% rising to a minimum of 3% from April 2019. You can choose to pay more
  • Your employees must be opted into the workplace pension, before opting out
  • You will be responsible for maintaining the scheme and ensuring full compliance every time the payroll is run

In order to reduce costs and administration time, employers are advised to research and implement Auto Enrolment before their final staging date. If you are unsure when your staging date is, please contact us and we can check this out for you.

If you have any questions about Auto Enrolment for business, please do not hesitate to contact us for an informal, no obligation meeting. Or, why not click the image below and download our fact sheet.
